MINTURN, COLORADO – Weston Backcountry started off the winter awards season strong, taking home two major industry prizes. Weston’s 2020 Japow Board claimed Outside Magazine’s 2019 Gear of the Year Award as well as Backcountry Magazine’s 2020 Editors Choice Award in early October.
The Japow splitboard is inspired by Mountains of Japan with the deepest snow on the planet. Featuring a directional, Camber-Pow Rocker Nose with a Swallowtail, Rugged Topsheet, Electra Sintered Base, + Tail V Carbon reinforcement, this is the board to keep you afloat while weaving through tight trees or laying down surf-inspired carves on the groomers. Turning this award winning board into a splitboard wasn’t as simple as just cutting it in half, they spent a significant amount of time testing optimal touring bracket placement and added metal reinforcement in the tail to keep your tips up while kick turning in a sketchy skintrack.
Backcountry Magazine’s Editors’ Choice award called the Japow board the best board for “people who want a swallow that jumps and stops.” Each October, the award recognizes the best skis, bindings, boots, apparel and splitboards on the market. Weston snowboards have been recognized by the Backcountry Magazine editors year in and year out as among the highest-quality all-mountain gear standouts available.
Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Year Award is awarded seasonally in recognition of the best climbing, skiing, snowboarding and general outdoors gear in the world. The 2019 edition of the Japow solid took home the gear of the year award last fall. Tester’s complemented its versatility despite its powder specific shape, “‘Given the choice to send or not to send,’ said one tester, ‘I’d send on the Japow.’ He went on to complement its “dreamy flex,” quick transitions despite a wide nose, and superglue-like edge hold.”
The 2020 edition of Weston’s Japow splitboard (MSRP $899 Also available at $599 for a solid) is available in lengths of 154, 159, 164 and 169 inches through westonbackcountry.com and Weston retail partners.
